Women in Insurance: Insurance Business America’s Elite Women of 2021

Insurance Business America (IBA) has spotlighted groundbreaking women of influence in the insurance industry for several years. IBA and an independent advisory panel select the final Elite Women list, which recognizes inspiring women who strive for excellence and impact and shape the future of the insurance industry. We are proud to announce that Chaya Cooperberg, EVP, Chief People and Communications Officer at AmTrust, was chosen for the Insurance Business Elite Women 2021 list.

Professional Achievement in a Tumultuous Year

Chaya Cooperberg, EVP, Chief People and Communications Officer, joined AmTrust Financial in July 2016. She oversees the company’s people, corporate communications and marketing strategies. Before joining AmTrust, she led investor relations, corporate communications and corporate affairs for multinational public companies, including Progressive Waste Solutions Ltd., Alderwoods Group, Inc. and Descartes Systems Group. Cooperberg began her career as a business journalist. Hired first by AmTrust to do investor relations, corporate communications and public relations, her role then evolved to oversee the marketing organization and, later, human resources.

2020: A Pivotal Year for Human Resources

Cooperberg established a health and safety culture during the coronavirus pandemic through her leadership and guidance in the past year. She pivoted the priorities of her global HR team to focus on helping more than 5,000 employees transition to work from home while also developing workplace safety protocols and plans for essential staff to work onsite. Cooperberg also led a company-wide listening tour, where she had the opportunity to meet and hear from approximately 875 AmTrust employees in small groups of 25. The conversations she led focused on health and wellness, working safely in the office during COVID, and Diversity and Inclusion programs.

At the start of 2020, Cooperberg and her human resources team launched AmWell, the company’s international well-being (physical, emotional, financial and work) program where employees can track their activity, participate in team challenges, and earn points towards rewards. The program includes Mindfulness Mondays and Well-being Wednesdays to help employees get additional emotional connections and support while working remotely.

Additionally, as head of Marketing & Communications, Cooperberg ensured that the Marketing team pivoted and prioritized programs that would help support agents, brokers and policyholders during the pandemic, including information about government funding and workplace safety.

Promoting Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace and the Insurance Industry

Cooperberg believes that we are all uniquely different, and it is the diversity of our backgrounds, experiences and approaches that make AmTrust successful. As a result, AmTrust incorporated a company-wide online training, “Learning Path on Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging for All,” which addresses unconscious bias and is a crucial part of our approach to ensuring all employees are fully valued in the way that they show up to work each day.

Diversity and inclusion are fundamental AmTrust values that drive day-to-day decision-making as well as long-term strategic direction. AmTrust seeks to cultivate a diverse workplace where the input of all employees is valued independent of employees' age, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, culture, religion, disabilities, or any other identity attribute or characteristic which makes someone unique.

AmTrust is a proud corporate sponsor of The National African American Insurance Association (NAAIA), a non-profit organization established to create a network among people of color and others employed in or affiliated with the insurance industry. We encourage employees to consider joining a local chapter and becoming members.

Women in Business: Experience Matters

Cooperberg is an accomplished human resources, marketing and communications executive with experience advising Boards and senior management at publicly traded, multinational companies. With more than 20 years of experience across industries (technology, specialty retail, industrial, financial services), Cooperberg has developed deep expertise in critical and strategic areas such as incentive compensation plans, succession planning, corporate culture, organizational design and restructuring, diversity and inclusion, ESG, brand and reputation management, shareholder activism, financial reporting and financial disclosure, and crisis communications.

Cooperberg joined AmTrust Financial as Chief Communications Officer in 2016, reporting to the Chairman and CEO, with global responsibility for branding and marketing, investor relations, public relations, social media and corporate communications. In 2018, she was promoted to Chief People and Communications Officer, with additional responsibility for the human capital function, including compensation, benefits, talent management, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). During her tenure, Chaya has overseen an organizational redesign and a program of cultural transformation, as well as leading workplace flexibility and employee safety programs through COVID-19.
