Forbes Magazine has been tracking America’s largest private companies for nearly 40 years. Each year brings many changes, with new entries, such as Twitter, acquisitions, buyouts, and companies returning to the 2022 list after dropping off in previous years.

The top five American private businesses for 2022 are:

1. Cargill
2. Koch Industries
3. Publix Supermarkets
4. Mars
5. Pilot Company

How Does Forbes Determine America’s Largest Private Companies?

Companies must have $2 billion in revenues to qualify for the annual list. Companies are ranked by revenues for their most recently completed fiscal year, which for 85% of the list was 2021. Forbes excludes companies based outside the U.S., organizations that don’t pay income taxes, mutually owned companies, cooperatives, businesses with fewer than 100 employees, as well as those who are more than 50% owned by another public, private or other non-U.S. company. They also do not include auto dealerships, real estate investment or management companies on their list. Forbes relies on data from voluntary business disclosures, Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) filings and estimates from Forbes researchers.
