Female Bonding Leave Top Paid Family Leave Claim

Topics: Paid Family Leave

Since the new Paid Family Leave Act went into effect in New York at the beginning of 2018, how has it been used? AmTrust Financial’s disability team analyzed its claims to better understand how paid family leave (PFL) is being used, and data shows us that female boding accounts for more than half of the claims.

The Pew Research Center found that the U.S. is the only country among 41 nations that does not mandate any paid leave for new parents. Without a national law in place, New York is one of only a handful of states that offers this benefit to new parents. Pew Research Center Data also shows that 1 in 4 US workers have taken leave to care for a seriously ill family member.

Both women and men are taking paid family leave for bonding, with nearly all women claimants taking Disability (DBL) and PFL back to back.

Paid Family Leave can also be taken intermittently in increments of as little as 1 day at a time for up to a year after the date of the birth, adoption or foster care.
