Workers’ Compensation Insurance Retail

Topics: Agent Resources Workers' Compensation

At first glance, you might not think of the retail industry as being one that could present a lot of workers’ compensation risk; however, consider this:

• Retail workers are often required to move merchandise, displays, etc. which can lead to strains, sprains, and other injuries related to lifting
• Falls from heights (stacking shelves that require the use of a ladder, for example) are a possibility
Slips, trips, and cuts are all a common cause of injuries in retail

Retail workers generally are on their feet for long periods of time without much rest. And during the holiday season, they might be working longer hours. Fatigue can lead to injuries on the job as well.

Workers’ Comp for the Retail Industry

When considering all of these, we look at the story behind every account to try and understand the risk involved. When it comes to writing a retail workers’ comp account, we generally focus on accounts that feature:

• At least one full-time employee (owners included), or part-time equivalent; no more than 75 employees at any one location per shift
• New ventures acceptable
• 24-hour exposures acceptable with two employees on duty third-shift and appropriate security measures in place

Here are just a few examples of the type of retail establishments we would cover:

Prohibited exposures include adult entertainment/bookstores, cannabis or cannabis by-products and accessories.
