Support Your Local Small Business 

Small retail business owners want consumers to shop “small” on Saturday, November 26. This year, as inflation, labor shortages and supply chain issues continue to impact the economy, small businesses across the country need our support more than ever.

The brainchild of American Express, Small Business Saturday (SBS) is a day to celebrate entrepreneurs everywhere, including the small businesses that line Main Street across America. SBS is celebrated on the Saturday after Thanksgiving in the U.S.

Introduced in 2010 as a day to support small businesses, SBS has a big impact on the communities these businesses call home. Here are a few statistics about the Small Business Saturday movement: 

• Last year, even with COVID-19 concerns, consumers spent an estimated $23.8 billion on SBS, up 18% from 2020 
• There was an increase in online shopping on SBS, with 58% of consumers shopping online compared to 56% in 2020
• 67 cents of every dollar spent at a small business remains in the local community
• A survey from the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB) reports that 91% of consumers believe it is more important than ever to support small businesses during the holiday season, and 83% plan to do at least some of their shopping at an independently owned retailer

Small businesses are vital to keeping the American economy strong, accounting for 99.9% of all businesses in the U.S. and generate about 50% of the U.S. gross domestic product and employing over 61.2 million people.
